Event Description : EXHIBITION "Sinuous Undulations: Temptations in Curves" An exhibition of contemporary studio pottery by Neeru Bhargava and Supriya Kanwar.
Curated by Rekha Bajpe aggarwal, Artist and Curator
When a fashion designer who is a ceramicist and a ceramicist who is a trained entrepreneur put together a collection, it is not just soulful, it is also very physical. A physical manifestation which shows the peace, calm and serenity of the artists in their work. But it also shows glimpses of something else. Something hinted at, something promised, something more to offer, something tempting. It is the temptations of curves…sensuous, suggestive, undulating, passionate and inspiring. It is the magic of ceramics, the attraction of the wheel-thrown artwork created by these two artists with over two decades of experience in clay between them. Coming together with silky, satiny, lustrous textures and the sparkle of large crystals, the artwork in this exhibition is bound to leave it’s mark on art lovers.
“Neeru and Supriya’s work is like a breath of fresh air. The forms are classical but the treatment of the surfaces is definitely not. The artists have experimented with various kinds of high and low temperature techniques of firing to bring a new look to their work. They have imbued the work with their life experiences and learnings and the works of art are richer because of that. Art brings out what is hidden in the souls of people. In their works in this exhibition, Neeru and Supriya have shared their souls, and what shows through is breathtaking.” says Rekha Bajpe Aggarwal, the Curator of the exhibition.
In Neeru Bhargava’s own words, “In this collection, the meandering curves, the sinuous undulations are a metaphor for how one's life takes different twists and turns. One can never predict what lies ahead, but one has to go with the flow and take things calmly. The lessons learnt from life are the main inspiration behind this collection.
My ultimate goal is for the viewers to feel a sense of peace and comfort when viewing my creations.”
“I have been exhibiting my work on a regular basis since 1996 and been selected to participate in various National and Regional camps. I have even exhibited my work in the Rashtrapati Bhawan, the official residence of the President of India. Recently my artworks have been selected for the Nationals by Lalit Kala Akademi.
A very private person, I am passionate about clay, and mostly prefer creating wheel-thrown artwork in the form of platters, bowls and tall forms. The sinuous curves and stern lines appeal to me in their pristine geometric beauty. Simplicity appeals to me. Nature influences me with its forms and colours, and that reflects in my work in the radiating beauty of the crystals on my platters, and the delicacy of the wings of the butterflies. My works titled “Broken wings” bring a lump to the throat.” says Supriya as she smiles mistily.
