Event Description : Ameera Nimjee (UChicago PhD Candidate and Lecturer in the Department of Music, University of Chicago) and Rumya S. Putcha (UChicago Alum and Assistant Professor in the Department of Performance Studies, Texas A&M University), will present a lecture-demonstration on the politics of performing Indian dance transnationally. Ameera and Rumya began their training in kathak and kuchipudi in Toronto and Houston respectively, both homes to large communities for Indian dance in the diaspora. They represent and package Indian dance in North America while also negotiating the form as perceived pardesis in India.
