Event Description : POETRY / MUSIC “Mystic poetry encounters” by Nuria Barros, Raquel Lanseros, Menchu Gutiérrez, Aurora Luque (poetas), Nathalie Ramírez (flauta), Shyamant Behal (guitarra)

Synopsis: Poetry recital by the Spanish poets Nuria Barros, Raquel Lanseros, Menchu Gutiérrez, and Aurora Luque, some of them we can consider as some of which could be considered heirs to the mystical tradition of the poetry of San Juan de la Cruz and Santa Teresa. The poems will be read in Spanish, English, Hindi and be accompanied by music for flute and guitar by Nathalie Ramírez and Shyamant Behal.

About the poets: 

Nuria Barros is a Spanish writer. She holds a PhD in Philosophy and is the author of poetry books, short-stories and novels. Among her works one should mention the books of poetry El hilo de agua (2004 - Ateneo de Sevilla Poetry Award), Nostalgia de Odiseo (2012) and La luz de la dinamo (2017 – Hermanos Machado Poetry Award); the volumes of short stories El zoo sentimental (2000) and Ocho centímetros (2015), as well as the novels Amores patológicos (1998) and El alfabeto de los pájaros (2011 - short-listed for the Troa Award to the Best Fiction Book). As a columnist, she has been awarded by the Fundación Mastia. She is a regular contributor to a number of literary magazines, as well as Spain’s leading daily, El País. Her works have been translated to Dutch, Italian, Portuguese and Croatian. Barrios is the Spanish translator of the Man Booker Prize-winning novelist John Banville.

Raquel Lanseros. Poet, translator and instructor, she is one of the most awarded and recognized voices of contemporary poetry in Spanish. About 200 critics of more than 100 universities around the world (Harvard, Oxford, Columbia and Princeton, among them) have chosen her as the most relevant Spanish-language woman poet born after 1970. Most influential poetry publishing houses have published her six original books of poetry. Some of her books have also been published in Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, El Salvador, United States, Italy and France. Her poetic work has also been compiled in four personal anthologies of collected poetry. As a translator, she has published several books including translation into Spanish of poetry works by Edgar Allan Poe, Lewis Carroll and Louis Aragon. She has been awarded some of the most prestigious Spanish poetry prizes. She holds a PhD in Didactics of Literature, an MA in Social Communication and a BA in French and English Philology. She also collaborates with various literary magazines and journals contributing poems, translations and critical reviews . Her poetic work has been translated to many languages and is included in numerous anthologies worldwide.

Menchu Gutiérrez. Self- educated, she studied Art and Literature in Madrid and London. She has published awardwinning poetry collections such as : “El grillo, la luz y la novia” (1981), “De barro la memoria (1987), “La mano muerta cuenta el dinero de la vida” (1987), “La mordedura blanca” (1989), “El ojo de Newton” (2005), “Lo extraño, la raíz” (2015). She has also published many prose works, among which we may highlight “Viaje de studios”
(Siruela 1995), “La table de las mareas” (Siruela 1998), ”La mujer ensimismada“ (Siruela, 2001), “Latente” (Siruela, 2002), “Disección de una tormenta” (Siruela, 2005), “Detrás de la boca” (Siruela, 2007), “El faro por dentro” (Siruela, 2011) y “araña,cisne,caballo (Siruela 2014). With the same publishing company, she published “La niebla, tres veces” (Siruela, 2011), which is a volume of her three first novels. As an essayist, she has published the
literary biographies “San Juan de la Cruz” (Omega, 2003) and “Decir la nieve” (Siruela, 2011), a literary essay about the snow universe and its metaphors.

Aurora Luque is a poet, translator, publisher , as well as teacher of Greek. She has directed the poetry collection “Cuadernos de Trinacria” and, with Jesús Aguado, the “maRemoto” collection of international poetry. Among her books of poems are the titles “Hiperiónida” (Federico García Lorca Award of the University of Granada, 1982), “Problemas de doblaje” (Accésit to the Adonais prize, 1990), “Carpe noctem” (Rey Juan Carlos Prize, 1994),
“Transitoria” (Rafael Alberti Prize and Andalusia Prize of the Critic, 1998), “Camaradas de Ícaro” (Fray Luis de Leon Award, 2003), “Haikus de Narila” (2005) and “La siesta de Epicuro” (Generation del 27 Award, 2008). Her poetic work has been collected in anthologies such as “Las dudas de Eros” (2000), “Portuaria” (2002), “Carpe verbum” (2004), “Carpe amorem” (2007) or “Fabricación de las islas” (2014). Her reflections on poetry are collected in “Una extraña industria” (2008). As a translator she has translated the poets Meleagro, Maria Lainá, Sappho, Catulo, Louise Labé and Renée Vivien.

About the musicians: 

Nathalie Ramírez. She is a professional flutist and has participated in different festivals in Xalapa, Cordoba, Veracruz, México, United States and India, both as a soloist and in chamber ensembles. In the year 2010 she received the scholarship of the ICCR to study in Delhi the course of Classical Hindustani Vocal with her actual guru Jyotika Dayal Paust.

Shyamant Behal studied under Geneviève Chanut at the École Normale de Musique de Paris and received a Diplôme d'Éxecution at the end of his studies. Since his return to New Delhi in 2007, he has given a number of concerts both in India and abroad, both as a soloist as well as part of different ensembles.
