Alankar Theatre has been involved in performing theatre arts from last 12 years. This is the first time that Alankar Theatre is coming to Delhi with 02 of their productions 'The First Teacher' and 'Thirunangai'. These plays reflect the mirror of society and bring forward the untouched sections of our society. These plays attempt to make a connection with audience and bring them closer to themselves only. These plays have earlier been performed in cities like Chandigarh, Amritsar, Rudraprayag (Uttrakhand), Hissar, Bathinda, Shimla, Patiala etc. and are critically acclaimed. Hindustan times has also called 'Thirunangai' as best production of year 2016 & 2017 in respective zone.

About the Plays:

25th August : 'The First Teacher' Hindi Play On Women Empowerment
First Teacher Hindi Play Alankar Theatre Still

This play is based on a book written by Russian writer 'Chingiz Aitmatov' in year 1962.
The director has related the story of a city in Russia with current situation of a city
"Mainpuri" in Uttar Pradesh, India.
Play is about the struggle of a teacher sent to a village by Government Organization to
teach the ignorant masses. But the villagers, instead of cooperating with him, refuse to
help and do not even let their children go to school. There is a 14 yrs. old girl 'Sangeeta',
an orphan, who is fascinated by the teacher and his knowledge. The girl lives with her
uncle-aunt and fall preys of their backward mindset that make her marry an old man by
taking lots of money. The teacher fights with all odds to rescue her from the problems. He
then sends girl to the city for studies only to make her a successful when she is grownup.
The play sends a strong message of women empowerment, girl education and a fight
against ignorance, backward mind set of the society which still persists in many places of
our country.
Duration : 1 hour 10 mins.

26th August : Thirunangai - Hindi Play about a Transgender

'Thirunangai' is the story of a young transgender- Chanda, who has been living in a 'Dera' with other transgender since shortly after her birth. She lives happily with the Dera-mates and they too are equally concerned about her. The Head of Dera 'Tara’ (her guardian, her mentor and a mother-figure) & other members support her to study and wish for her higher education. However, fortune plays its role and Chanda's life turns on its head when she gets to know about her biological family. She becomes hell bent to meet her family (a royal one) and is strongly retaliated by Tara. Tara stops Chanda from meeting them as such an encounter would most certainly have catastrophic consequences. Chanda, on the other hand, despite all the resistance, meets her family and what follows is a turn of events that reflects how transgender are treated in our society.
The play is subtle in its depiction of the plight of the transgender and an in-your-face spectacle of a spectrum of emotions of a despised community which is as human as you and me.
Duration : 1 hour 15 mins.

Director for both the plays : Chakresh Kumar
(Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar National Awardee)
