Event Description : THEATRE "Soz-khwani – Songs of Lament" Hindustain/Urdu storytelling Conceived and performed by Aksari Naqvi.
“Soz-khwani”, is a poetic & musical description and expression of a battle against tyranny in Karbala. It is a beautiful expression of human emotions woven in Awadhi symbols, narration of life and culture. This Art form is performed traditionally during the month of Muharram, which is month of mourning for Shia Muslims. It is performed during the religious gatherings in an event called the “Majalis” where people gather for mourning for the sacrifices made in Karbala. The Art form has really been an important tradition of Awadh in terms of classical Awadhi, Urdu and some Persian poetic forms. Soz-khwani is also very much part of the folk music traditions of Awadh. The compositions for Soz-Khwani are based on classical Ragas. Askari Naqvi has been performing Soz-khwani and Nauha-khwani from childhood onwards, as part of the family tradition. He has devised a performance form where he sings/performs a Soz, Marsiaz and Nauhaz with some story and narration in between.
