Event Description : MUSIC : Atma live.
Atma means soul in Sanskrit, which best describes the approach of these musicians. Coming together from India and Austria, Aman Kumar, Aman Mahajan, Patrick Dunst and Grilli Pollheimer seamlessly fuse compositions based on Indian Konnakol (vocal Indian percussion), enriched with western harmonies.
The group was founded in August 2015 in Bangalore, India as a trio of two percussionists and a reed player. For their tour through India in July 2017, the trio has now extended to a quartet with the addition of the musical polyglot Aman Mahajan on Piano. The result is a borderless fusion of Indian classical music with Western classical and Jazz.
The musical heart of the ensemble is Muthu Kumar, a Bangalore-based tabla virtuoso, who has been taught by Zakir Hussain and has during his career shared the stage with the likes of Alice Coltrane. Along with his musical mastery, he also contributes numerous compositions to the current program. Further, the ensemble consists of Grilli Pollheimer, a well-acclaimed Austrian percussionist. Grilli is classically trained and has enriched the Austrian music scene over the last ten years. Aman Mahajan is a promising Indian musician of his generation, playing a diversity of musical idioms and having worked with musicians of various nationalities and cultural backgrounds. Patrick Dunst, the woodwind specialist who has blended different music traditions with his ensembles Tribal Dialects and Tripod, is the second composer of this program, and even lends the band his melodic voice.
