Event Description : FICA and Gallery Threshold invite you to In conversation with the artist Priya Ravish Mehra of ongoing show : EXHIBITION “Presence in Absence” A solo show in Mixed Media Works by Priya Ravish Mehra at Gallery Threshold, C-221, Sarvodaya Enclave > 26th March to 30th April 2017

FICA and Gallery Threshold invite Laila Tyabji, craft activist, designer and writer, and Rakhi Peswani, artist, to converse with the works of Priya Ravish Mehra at her ongoing exhibition Absence in Presence. The artist will also be present for the interaction and we look forward to an informal discussion session with the invited respondents, the artist and the audience at large.

Respondents: Laila Tyabji and Rakhi Peswani

About the speakers:

Laila Tyabji is Chairperson & founder member of DASTKAR, an NGO working with Crafts & Craftspeople in 25 states all over India. Laila's work with artisans includes the chikan workers of SEWA Lucknow, Lambani tribals in Karnataka, and ari, sozni, mirror-work, and kantha craftswomen in Kashmir, Kutch, Bihar and Bengal. Many of her most rewarding projects involve creating new employment avenues through craft for pastoral and marginalised rural communities - bonded labour in Bihar, displaced villages in Ranthambhore, tribals in Orissa, victims of insurgency in Kashmir. Previous to Dastkar, Tyabji studied art in Baroda and Japan, and worked as a freelance designer in textiles, graphics, interiors and the theatre. She was awarded Padma Shri in 2012.

Rakhi Peswani trained in Painting in her BFA and Ceramic Sculpture in her MFA, both from Faculty of Fine Arts, M S University, Baroda. Her works amalgamates three tentative zones; Craft as a ‘meaningless’, provocative activity in today’s world, as an intimate condition, and as a necessary and unavoidable body process. Peswani has held solo exhibitions since at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi and Guild Gallery, Mumbai. She received the Emerging Artist Award from FICA in 2007 and the Inlaks Scholarship for the UNIDEE in Residence at Cittadellarte, Fondazione Pistoletto, Biella, Italy in 2006. Peswani is currently Visiting Associate Professor at School of Culture and Creative Expression, Ambedkar University, Delhi.
