Moderated by Sunil Gupta

In this presentation, Steven Evans will discuss the recent FotoFest 2016 Biennial and the programmes and ideas generated by the United States’ first and most expansive international Biennial dedicated to photography and new media arts. The discussion following the talk will be moderated by Sunil Gupta, the Lead Curator for the 2017 festival which has an India focus.

About the speaker: Steven Evans, Executive Director, FotoFest International, is an artist, writer, curator, and museum professional. At FotoFest since 2014, he is responsible for exhibitions, art programs, administration, and is director of the FotoFest Biennial. With FotoFest co-founders Wendy Watriss and Fred Baldwin, Evans co-curated and organized the FotoFest 2016 Biennial central exhibition CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES: Looking at the Future of the Planet. With Watriss, he co-edited the hardcover book CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES (Amsterdam: Schilt Publishing, 2016). Evans also curated the FotoFest inter-Biennial exhibition I Am A Camera (2015), and co-curated International Discoveries V (2015) and International Discoveries VI (2017), featuring new projects from around the world. He recently represented FotoFest at photography events and festivals in Argentina, Brazil, China, France, Korea, Lithuania, and Russia.

Prior to FotoFest, Evans worked with a wide range of artists and collaborators as Managing Director of Dia:Beacon in New York State and as director of the Linda Pace Foundation in San Antonio, Texas. His own artwork incorporates a range of media, including photography. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions in New York City, Los Angeles, Paris, Stockholm, Berlin, and elsewhere.

About the Moderator: Sunil Gupta studied photography under Lisette Model. He has worked to promote a greater understanding of questions regarding representation, sexuality, access and cultural differences. He is Visiting Faculty at NID, RCA (London) and UCA (Farnham). His work is represented by Vadehra Art Gallery, Delhi, SepiaEye, New York and Stephen Bulger, Toronto.
