Event Description : "After Circulation : Emplacing modern and Contemporary art from India in New York" by Manuela Ciotti, Associate Professor of Global Studies, Aarhus University & Fellow, Institute of Advanced Study, JNU.

What politics of presence has emerged from the circulation of modern and contemporary art out of India? How do specific contexts and institutions in which art exhibitions have taken place around the world affect their interventions: How do these factors shape the choice of research methods around exhibition"? Drawing upon a wider project on the global spread of modern and contemporary art from India observed at museums, galleries and biennales in Asia, Europe and the US, this talk goes to the heart of these questions. In particular, it examines the exhibition. After Midnight Indian modernism to Contemporary India 1947-1997- held at the Queens Museum in 2015 - as a site for observing the mobilization of a number of categories vis-à- vis the everyday activities of an out-of-Manhattan cultural institution.
