Event Description : Bahroop Arts Group presents Shahid Anwar Memorial Lecture by Makrand Sathe (Marathi Playwright and Author)

Shahid Anwar (1965-2016) was one of the most promising playwrights of our time. Within a span of mere two decades, Shahid Anwar was well known not only as a theatre activist, but also as an incisive theatre critic and culture analyst. One of the founding members of Bahroop Arts Group, he believed theatre and arts play a catalyst role in transformation of society or social change as a whole. Through the theatre group Bahroop Arts Group he mentored many young people and strived to influence these young minds in the direction of thoughtful and meaningful theatre; to retain such basic qualities as humanity and a scientific temper, which are fast depleting today.
For keeping alive the essence of Shahid Anwar and to uphold the tradition of debate and dialogue so as to bring about positive changes, Bahroop Arts Group has instituted the Shahid Anwar Memorial Lecture.

Bahroop, a JNU-based theatre group, has been one of the major groups marked prominently in the cultural map of the Capital. Largely consisting of students, it has participated in all major theatre festivals of the country including Bharat Rang Mahotsav (NSD), Urdu Akademi Drama Festival and Bhartendu Natya Samaroh (SKP) over a span of twenty years. Over this journey, we have tried to take up socially and politically relevant plays and opened platforms for debates on burning issues.

Shahid Anwar’s works have been included in many literary anthologies. The three collections of plays to his credit - Ghair Zaroori Log, B-Three and Hamare Samay Mein - published in Hindi and Urdu both, are manifestations of his belief and actions. Habib Tanvir always appreciated the writings and plays of Shahid Anwar and has also written the preface of Ghair Zaroori Log. Shahid has also translated significant Indian and foreign plays including Mahesh Dattani’s Final Solution, Indira Parthsarathy’s Aurangzeb, Dario Fo’s Tigress Story and Carel Capek’s R.U.R. His reviews and articles have appeared in major national and international journals.
