Event Description : THEATRE “Pascualnama” by Camilo José Cela
As part of 'Literature and Thinking' Series.
Synopsis: The Family of Pascual Duarte by Camilo Jose Cela, is an iconic novel in Spanish literature. Owning to its dark and gruesome imagery, the text was banned upon its release. Pascual Duarte, a poor peasant in a nameless Spanish village, retells his crual upbringing and brutal murders. The narration is happening from a prison cell where he has been condemned to death. The text is bracketed by letters written by the prison guard, warden
etc, who are working towards getting this manuscript published. Our production aims to relook at Pascual’s relationship with his mother and his wife, Lola. The performance brings to life the underlying strains that define these relationships, thereby breaking the calm denemour that Pascual wants to reserve in his retellings. From performing his narrative, Pascual ends up himself being performed. We welcome you to lose your head with us.
Organized by Third Space Collective
About the performers: Third Space Collective (TSC). We are a collective of theatre practitioners in Delhi, creating possibilities for a new vocabulary of performance making to emerge from the artists of the city. An accessible pedagogy, which enables the understanding of theatre as an art form and its application, is intrinsic to the Collective’s being. Our work challenges the very socio-political canvas it is derived from. Probing and
problematizing, we begin conversations. TSC’s past work includes ‘Love, Prufrock’- a physical piece, derived from T.S Eliot’s Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock and ‘Dastaan-e-Bhookh’- an adaptation of Sam Shepard’s Curse of the Starving Class.
Assistant director: Neel Sengupta is a graduate of Ramjas College where he started his journey of theatre. He did collegiate theatre for three years and then went on to work with Third Space collective, Aagaaz theatre Trust and Tadpole repertory as an actor, director and sounds operator. Noel also has worked as a workshop instructor for children. Noel is currently based in Delhi and is focusing his work on the lines of Theatre direction.
Director: Dhwani Vij is a theatre Director/Actor/Performer, based in Delhi. She holds a Masters degree in Theatre (specializing in Physical Theatre and Performance) from University of London, Royal Holloway College, UK. She has in the past created acclaimed work with eminent theatre masters like Anuraddha Kapoor, Khalid Tyabbji, Maya
Rao and Amitesh Grover. She is one of the founding members of a Delhi based drama group, Third Space Collective. Her work with the Collective includes the devised performance "Love, Prufrock", a derivation of T.S Elliot's Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. Her Directorial project "Dastaan-e-Bhookh", an acclaimed production based
on Sam Shepard's Curse of the Starving Class, has won several accolades at Thespo '17. Currently she is involved as an actor in Atul Kumar's award winning production, "Piya Beherupiya"- an adaptation of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.
