About the Talk : The first day I heard of the word 'ethnography' in the beginning of my undergraduate course in Anthropology, I was made to understand that it was perhaps one of the most problematic words in social sciences - signifying a hierarchy of the right to intrude into the lives of others, by assuming supremacy of the ethnographer over the ethnographic subject. I also remember seeing mug shots -- of 'tribal' men and women -- in books written by E.T. Dalton, H.H. Risley, S.C. Roy and other colonial and Indian ethnographers - literally putting photos on record - of standard 'specimens' in frontal and lateral view. Documentation thus has always been an oppressive and political tool.

Most problems of ethnographic documentation of living traditions may be summarized within these above frames. The talk will address ideas of the ethics and politics of documentation techniques that borrow from ethnography heavily and assume the rights to generalize and place documented material as the truth - thus suggesting ways out of the colonial trope by developing a more reflective method of documentation.
