Event Description : EXHIBITION ‘Ether is all that is’ by G. R. Iranna.

The artist’s current suite of works consists of canvases, works on paper and installations.  After receiving an overwhelming response at the Kochi Muziris Biennale, this year with his work titled ‘Ash to Ash’, Iranna is all set to enthrall the audience in the capital with a body of work which is an extension of the same theme and process.

The artist uses the holy ash or “vibhuti’, as a primary medium in this series of work, which is further referred to as a metaphor for the impermanence of life. Birth and death, thereby, exist together, as one.  We rise from the dust and we go back to ash. What remains is an infinite nothingness.  The ash is spiritually believed to ward off negative energies and the artist through his work makes an attempt to put forward the union of these energies and the circularity of flow between them.
It will be apt to quote Sukanya Garg in this context, ‘Even Iranna’s choice of material, in this case holy ash or “vibhuti’, is a metaphor for the impermanence of life. While the egg is a symbol of birth and life, the ash it is composed of reminds us of the imminent death. Birth and death, thereby, exist together, as one. We rise from the dust and we go back to ash. What remains is an infinite nothingness’.

About the artist : Iranna`s first one-man show was held in 1992 at the College of Visual Art, Gulbarga. Since then, he has shown his paintings at:  And the last shall be the first: G R Iranna, Works 1995-2015; NGMA Bengaluru, Bengaluru (India); curated by RanjitHoskote in 2016, Tempered Branches; AICON Gallery, New York (USA) from 2014 to 2015.

Iranna has also participated in National art shows at- Forming in the pupil of an Eye, Kochi MuzirisBiennale , curated by SudarshanShetty., The Eye and The Mind: New Interventions in Indian Art,NGMA New Delhi, New Delhi (India) in 2016, and international Art shows at The Eye and The Mind: New Interventions in Indian Art, Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangzhou (China), Chaina Art Museum, Shanghai (China), Minsheng Art museum, Beijing (China), by NGMA New Delhi  and Musée de la Toile de Jouy, L'Espace d'art contemporain, Paris (France) in 2015, and in 2014 he participated in Incidents of Phenomena; India, Italy (SpazioCerere Roma), Myanmar; curated by VeeranganaSolanki, Unmarked; Collective project at BC Gallery, Kochi Biennale, Kochi (India)

Iranna has also received national and international recognition throughout his career. His awards include those at ABPF Foundation, Signature Art Prize- Singapore Art Museum Jury Award 2008 in the year 2008 and in 2004 during the Harmony Show, he received The Artist of the Year Award in Mumbai (India).
