Event Description : MUSIC : Dr. Joseph D Howell and The Variety Hour.

Dr. Joseph D Howell : Born in Porterville, California, Dr Joseph Howell developed his intense interest for Jazz at Junior high when he first played Clarinet in school at the age of nine. He added the tenor sax and flute to his instrument arsenal in high school while listening to a variety of jazz legends at home. For undergrad, Howell attended CSU Northridge, beginning a dual study focus on jazz and classical music. At the end of his Masters degree studies at San Diego State University, he appeared on a few duos on Rick Helzer’s recording Face in the Mirror while preparing the move from California to Boston to attend New England Conservatory of Music. At NEC, Joseph earned his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Jazz Performance. The culmination of his studies there was his first album, entirely comprised of original compositions, with classmates he knew at the conservatory, Jazz Clarinet Now!


The Variety Hour is a swing outfit that was put together early 2008 by a group of likeminded artists that had been playing very different genres for many years. Once they started playing, a sound emerged that is unique on the Indian music circuit and deeply rooted in the style of the old jazz giants. The current line up includes Arjun Sagar Gupta (Piano/Vocals), Nikhil Vasudevan (Drums), Abhinav Khokhar (upright bass). The Variety Hour plays standards covered by greats such as Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Bill Evans and Chet Baker and compositions of Ellington, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk and others. They have been the house band at various popular venues in Delhi, notably Haze, Retro Sushi and Mist. They have also performed for corporate entities like Penguin Books, the Blues Society of India, Park Hotel, Accenture, Harley Davidson etc. The Variety Hour currently has several hundred shows under its belt.
