Event Description :
EXHIBITION
Myths and Rites in the Traditional Masks of Portugal” by Balbina Mendes.
As part of ' Plastics Arts and Architecture' series.

About the exhibition: "We wear the habit, we put on the mask and go out to the street dancing as an action of social, cultural and personal intervention - We are spirits that are released! - We are a celebration of life!"
As the characters she represents, Portuguese artist Balbina Mendes is resilient and does not conform to the superficial nature of days, to places without reference and to time without time. Balbina paints the permanence of the ritual, the profane that aspires to the spiritual, primal force, in authentic way that shows origin, formation and emotion.Balbina's paintings occupy firstly this place of preservation of cultural memory, its culture, in order to show that each painting is itself the wearing of a habit, the performing of a dance. But contrary to her characters, here the author removes the mask - the mask of everyday life - and objectively pursues the search of the origin, of the timeless, of pure emotion. And so, each painting is another stage of a quest, each painting is a spiritual transformation.

About the artist: Balbina Mendes was born in 1955 in Miranda do Douro, in the heart of Northern Portugal, lives and works in Vila Nova de Gaia – Oporto. Dedicated exclusively to painting, having held dozens of solo exhibitions in Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Austria, USA and Australia. He also participated in numerous group exhibitions and is represented in many public and private collections in Portugal and abroad. She currently attends a Master in Painting at the Fine Arts Faculty of Oporto’s University.
