Event Description : Sansaptak presents Multi lingual Play ‘“7 Raison d'être or 7 Reasons of Being". The Hindi and English translation of original Bengali play.
The play is an inspiration from master Japanese Film-maker Akira Kurosawa's much acclaimed film 'Yume' meaning 'Dreams'.
All the seven plays or dreams were originally dreamt by Akira Kurosawa. I was merely inspired by them.
Kurosawa captured his childhood dreams on the silver screen. I do not know how much these silver screen dreams are melancholic, but according to the words of the eminent movie critic, Malcolm Austin, "Although Kurosawa's Yume or Dreams have a complex concealed meaning, the surreal imagery of these dreams take us to the alluring land vivid with spectacular Asian philosophy". Austin declared that the 1990 film was an Asian Manifesto. An oriental philosophical proclamation.
I have not translated Kurosawa's Dreams into a theatrical form. I have followed the path of Freud's 'Interpretation of Dreams'. Dreams have come a long way starting from the prehistoric man to today's post-post modern society. They have provided us with introspection and retrospection, and have instigated inquisitiveness in Man about the human civilization; its effervescence and enthusiasm.
Simultaneously, it has also instilled proclivity of the destruction of the civilization itself, and self contradictory apathy that has evoked a state of mind which seeks an Utopian harmony. What I have tried to do, nonetheless, is to impart the underlying message in Kurosawa's film, that is intuition and the substitution.
A scientific definition of a dream is tricky. However, we do know that dreams are lucid, yet symbolic. It is inevitable that symbolic substitution is the one and only strong weapon for painters, poets, playwrights , sculptor and others. Isn't it? Can we deny this?
So, the dreams which are not mine but for sure those are of Human history- I have conceived them with spontaneity and I allowed my pen to do the job through my conscious will. As aptly Kalidas uttered in his play 'Meghdoot- "Sapnenu Shayanu - protibhubenu" or it can also be audaciously stated that I in a experience levied state of mind along with a willful and solitary introspective disposition sat down to create these 7 reverie miscellany- Dream-enchanted...!
