Event Description : EXHIBITION “For and Against Narrative 2016" by renowned artist Praneet Soi. 

About the Artworks in the collage above : 

Portrait of the Front Yard is one in the series of Silverpoint works that Praneet Soi had worked on when in Huisduinen (North Holland) where he was on a residency at the Pompgemal Atelier, Mondriaan Foundation. This set of works sees Soi bringing landscape into his work, and reengaging with the hand in art making (as opposed to reproduced images). Making references to the role of the hand(made) in Arts and Crafts movement , Soi contrasts the bold dark canvas surface with the carefully detailed life-study sketches in the circle consisting of differentview of the landscape (the pine cones, close-up of the tree, the pond and reed), bringing the focus to engaging with the landscape as motif.

The work Brooklyn depicts the view from Praneet Soi’s New York studio from many years ago. The view overlooking the East River contrasts the industrial Brooklyn in the background with the soaring Manhattan skyline in the foreground, making legible Soi’s early interest in the link between city, industry and labour. While the links were thoroughly explored by Soi years later when working in Kolkata on the Kumartuli works, this work presents a points departure of sorts in this direction of enquiry.
