Area : Mandi House Area “Devi” is the Primordial energy that attributes supreme divinity, power over creation, all speech, nature, mind and liberation. The embodiment of feminine power, as envisioned in our scriptures, is often referred to as a talented daughter in the form of Saraswati (goddess of learning and the fine arts) or a new bride as the 'coming of Lakshmi (goddess of wealth) into the house.
This divine energy as a feminine force embraces and enlivens all aspects of reality. This energy takes a wide variety of forms, including nature, creation, life force, movement, mind, and strength, as well as the power to dominate or destroy. Devi, is beautiful, benevolent, fertile, motherly, attractive, and full of knowledge, compassion, and desire. In today’s world understanding these levels of energies also takes us beyond the association of femininity with gender. These Transformative forces within the mind and heart, can cleanse our mental and emotional bodies, put us in touch with the protective powers within us and deeply change the way we see the world. This flux of mind and matter in Creation—the Cosmic Power or Primordial Energy, acknowledges women as the vessels of both creative and destructive power.
Shampa uses a synthesis of philosophy, aesthetics and technique to create her own language on the canvas. Symbols fascinate her, as they have a language of their own and encompass the power of silence within them. The forms and elements are an integral part of the space where sometimes they cross the threshold; the boundaries dissolve and become part of the matrix.
The Acrylic on Canvas works have solid colour as consciousness by definition arises from the Brahman, which is like an absolute ‘substance’, homogenous, continuous, indivisible and unchanging. And some areas appear to be composed not from a single homogenous whole but of discrete ‘particles’, like the bits and bytes of data in a computer. These parts are a mere ensemble based on disconnected bits, which only give the appearance of a complete structure. To the artist these are parts of the puzzle we call ‘life’, pulsating with energy. Speaking about her works, Shampa says, “The colours in my paintings are juxtaposed to construct a range of hues that sedate and inspire a quiet meditative mood. And as the work progresses it is becomes more aesthetics and less of an idea and the vision starts getting clearer and clearer layer-by-layer.”
On display will be her artwork Lakshmi, where the artist has used the elephant, image of the goddess, lotus, Footprint of the goddess, pair of fish to depict personification of abundance, prosperity, wealth, well-being and harmony. To depict the Positive Energy of intellect, mind, and speech which are symbolic to Saraswati, the artist has used the white lotus, the swan representing the power of discrimination guiding us to take the positive in life and leave out the negative. The vivid depiction of Kali as a dancing form of the goddess, red hibiscus and yantra embodies the energies of creation and dissolution. A universal war between knowledge and ignorance, truth and falsehood, the oppressor and the oppressed. For Durga symbolic of Shakti - the female force, latent in each human being, Shampa has used the shankh, tiger, crescent moon, multiple hands which encompasses the essence of salvation and sacrifice. Her painting Sita has a clever use of multiple deer and image Rama to epitomise the force of undying devotion, dedication, self-sacrifice, courage and virtuosity. Radha, representing the truth of our soul, the unexpressed, unrequited longings of the heart, suppressed by social realities, which cry out to Krishna has been depicted with elements like Krishna playing the flute and motif of lotus. Bhuvaneshwari, a complex artwork, the artist has used different forms from nature as the goddess transcends everything as a boundless and formless presence without any limitation. The whole Macrocosm stands as her body and the countless existing beings represent her precious jewels and adornments. Then there are the Five Elements Jal, Vayu, Prithvi, Agni, and Akash, that are representations of the transformation that occurs in the world around us, they are metaphors for describing how things interact and relate with each other as part of the exhibition. For Bhairavi, the artist has used seated form of the goddess, crescent moon as incarnation of Shiva. Ardhanareshwara is a meditative representation of right side with the masculine energy with the bull and a serpent and left side the feminine energy with the lotus and a lion. The artwork is a manifestation of masculine and the feminine energies are equally divided within ourselves, a balance of which creates a fulfilling life force. Gayatri, a dynamic force that inspires towards the righteous wisdom, invoking the energies to bestow knowledge, health and longevity
Speaking about the show, Anu Bajaj, Founder Gallery Art Positive says, "The artworks talks about the female principle, not just as a larger than life goddess but as an idea or an energy denoting or idealising different virtues or facets of human nature. Whether it is Durga symbolised by courage or Saraswati by learning or Lakshmi with wealth or Kali denoting creation. These are attributes which are latent in all of us, and those that we all aspire towards to reach the innate Devi that is a woman."
