The title of the exhibition, “Red Moon Songs” is derived referring to ancient Mother-Goddess rituals, as a form of revival and celebration of the feminine principal. “Red Moon Songs” intends to posit a space for thinking and being, one where feminine energies contemplate ways of being and ways of reclaiming kindred spirits through the medium of artistic expression. The exhibition reflects a collection of works that not just by ‘woman artists’, because creating gender binaries can often be reductive, but by artists exploring feminine spirits and energies irrespective of their gender. These selected works are not exhaustive of the complex gender spectrum, however they do chart a visual narrative that explores the dynamics of creation and creativity, of nurturance and kinships, which grows outside the realms of the Meta narrative, that is often viewed as patriarchal and aggressive—qualities that are not necessarily male.
The exhibition curated by Georgina Maddox, where around 30 artists will be showcasing a variety of media starting from paintings, video installations and sculptures to other mixed media work will try to walk away from the mainstream. The capabilities and in-capabilities of both men and women are shattered and are brought under a single frame. The intention is to underscore not just the end product but the process of searching for one’s place of belonging, the journey being all important as much as the destination that lies ahead.
In any one culture, certain behaviors or practices may be widely recognized as “feminine” or “masculine,” irrespective of whether they are adopted by women or by men. Femininities and masculinities are not descriptors of sexual orientation. Hence taking off from this reasoning, my intention is to map the feminine within the masculine and to reflect upon the masculine within the feminine, irrespective of biological gender of the artist, rather to tap the spirit of the feminine.
Our culture has had a long heritage of associating the feminine principle with what it means to be female and the masculine principle with what it means to be male. As a result, both men and women have traditionally been locked into rigid culturally-defined gender roles that have not been helpful for anyone who wishes to live a more meaningful, creative, and soul making life .
The intention of the show is to uncover these hidden myths and subvert the modern-day taboos of being un-clean and excluded from the place of worship. It is an attempt to reclaim this great cosmic journey, by both feminine and masculine energies. It is also an attempt to reflect upon the porous nature of boundaries created around gender binaries.
