Maa Retire Hoti Hai is originally written in Marathi by playwright- actor- director Ashok Patole titled as ‘Aai Retire Hotey’ around 30 years ago. Yet its relevance remains the same even today.
The play describes a sore wound which the Indian mothers have been covering up for decades under the gentle curtain of love, duty and sacrifice. From the time, a woman takes a birth till she dies, she is labelled with many roles and responsibilities expected of her. As a girl she has to behave in a certain way in the society, as a wife she has to take care of her husband, children and in-laws and when she grows old, she has to take care of her grandchildren. Basically, the society exploits her in the name of various labels.
When the protagonist Sudha, the mother realises her existence and importance in her family where she experiences the dismal behaviour and lies of her children & husband to her usefulness, she gives one month’s statutory notice and declares that she will ‘retire’ from family life and its manifold responsibilities.
The play highlights the events in a family after the mother decides to quit working. A woman plays a pivotal role in the society by fulfilling her duties as a mother, sister, wife, aunt and daughter. Sudha, chooses to retire from being a mother and live life on her own terms. The chaos this decision creates in the family becomes comical and enlightening. Like most families, the protagonist family in the play is passing through a phase of emotional turmoil. It’s an eye opener to the bitter truths of life.
