Event Description : DANCE : Kalyani Kala Mandir Presents "Nayika" A Neo Classical Dance Production by Rashmi Khanna

Since time immemorial the complications of human relationships have spawned many stories of love and betrayal, rights and wrongs. As relevant now, as they were then, each of us continue to grapple with our own version of right and wrong super imposed with social, legal and religious definitions and idealistic expectations. 

NAYIKA-the upcoming fusion dance production by Kalyani Kala Mandir is inspired by the Nayika Bheda of the Natya Shastra incorporating different elements of dance styles, music as well as poetry. Conceptualised by Rashmi Khanna, the production is a beautiful collaboration between the wordsmith Saumya Kulshreshtha and the master musician Prasanna Shekar. Produced by Rashmi and Anshuman Khanna it has been choreographed by Rashmi Khanna and Suraj Verma. Rashmi Khanna, Suraj Verma and Asees Chadha are the performing artists. Guru Smt Rashmi Khanna, a prominent Bharatnatyam exponent, is acknowledged as an adept dancer, guru, choreographer and a special educator. Director and the founding member of Kalyani Kala Mandir Society she started her training in the Dandayudapanipillai style of Bharatnatyam from Guru Smt Kalyani Shekar at age seven. Her achievement in the precision of technique, form and abhinaya in the field of Bharatnatyam as well as creative Indian dance is unparalleled. Recipient of many honours and awards Rashmi has performed at many prestigious dance festivals in India and abroad. Apart from Bharatnatyam, Rashmi is proficient in other dance forms such as Kathak, Chhau, Indian folk, Jazz, Salsa, Tap and Modern Indian Ballet.

Saumya Kulshreshtha has made a name for herself as a Poet, Blogger, Editor and Translator. She runs a poetry club in the city called Poets' Collective, which has become popular as an informal platform to share heartfelt words. A part of the founding team of Kaafiya - Delhi's own poetry festival, Saumya conducts poetry and creative writing workshops in NGOs, schools and colleges. A guest teacher at IIIT Delhi, her blog - Nascent Emissions - has attracted more than 4 million hits.


Prasanna is a music composer/producer who attended the Berklee College of Music with a scholarship. Upon his return he worked with film director Ramgopal Varma on 6 features and has also produced music for many Tamil and Telugu films. He is currently composing and producing for artists and for commercials and has his own multi-genre electronic band called Deus X Machina for which he also writes tracks.
