Event Description :  Akshara Theatre presents Gopal Sharman’s "The Ramayana" based on Gopal Sharman’s theatrical masterpiece.

The Ramayana “India’s Gift to Broadway”
- New York Times

Gopal Sharman’s contemporary dramatic interpretation of The Ramayana in English took the international theatre world by storm from the 70’s to the 90’s. Performed by legendary actress Jalabala Vaidya in a solo tour de force on Broadway, the West End, United Nations Headquarters, National Theatres of Europe, Canada, as far as the Fiji Islands and 35 Indian cities and towns, to packed houses, rave reviews and standing ovations worldwide -- The Ramayana created dramatic history.

The play has been seen recently in a highly acclaimed full-cast version, where Jalabala performs the opening and closing scenes, supported by the talented young actors of the Akshara Repertory.

This year Gopal Sharman’s opus is being presented in a new avatar, as a play for intelligent children with questing and curious minds. Important episodes from the play are woven into a stimulating story, creating an exciting and innovative theatrical experience. The play is best enjoyed by children between 7 and 16 years.

The production retains the dramatic intensity of Gopal Sharman’s script, exploring the human characters of Rama and Sita, with reverence, delicacy and insight, through some of the most exquisite stage writing in modern theatre.

The cast is a mix of the Akshara Repertory – which includes the third generation of the Akshara ‘gharana’ -- and talented students from the Akshara’s Diksha Programme for children.

While Gopal and Jalabala’s grandson Dhruv Shetty plays Rama and grand-daghter Yashna Shetty plays Kaikeyi, the part of Sita is played by young Sufi Dharma. A time-travelling Hanuman is played by Puneet Saraswat and the magnetic and compelling Ravana is played by Vijay S. Kumar. Youngsters Gurjas Singh and Tanisha Singh play Lakshmana and Mandodari respectively, while Tanmay Singh is the Narrator, supported by Rakesh Palisetty, Ankur Anand, R.S. Raghu, Avi Kapoor and others.

Together, Gopal, Jalabala and their young cast explore the magic and mystery of Rama “in whose voice the dumb babble love’s profundities and the lame prance gaily over unscaled peaks.”
