Event Description : THEATRE “The Altar of Wonders” & “The Widowed Pimp”
400 anniversary of the death of Cervantes.
Synopsis:
“The Widowed Pimp”. A pimp, Trampagos, mourns the loss of Pericona, his best prostitute, whose death also marks the loss of his income. He speaks of her as if she were a saint, when in fact she has been martyred to her profession, in an unpleasant death from syphilis. Other prostitutes come and offer themselves as Trampagos’ new partner, and after considering their merits, he chooses one of them. As they prepare for the wedding, a figure created by the writer Quevedo, Cervantes’ contemporary, shows up; this figure is Escarramán, a well-respected ruffian leader within this comic underworld. He is recently returned a hardened criminal. from imprisonment in the galleys. During his imprisonment, he had been hung and disembowelled in effigy, and tales of his infamy had become the stuff of local songs and legend.
Musicians appear to lead a song and dance (and to take part in the wedding feast, especially the wine), and everyone dances, although Escarramán insists on performing one of the dances on his own, as his skill as a dancer is also well known. The play ends in song, dance and praise for the ruffian anti-hero.
“The Altar of Wonders” is based on “The Marvellous Puppet Show”. This play exposes the nature of the racial and ethnic prejudice in Cervantes’ society, based on the social codes of the purity of blood or limpieza de sangre. The Mayor and the Governor, the ignorant, rustic and backward town leaders, are taken in by a pair of charlatans who trick them into claiming to see an imaginary puppet show which is in fact non-existent (along the lines of ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’). The magic nature of the show is that it cannot be seen either by people born illegitimately or those whose ancestors were not Christians. The Governor and his aldermen want to be seen as good cristianos viejos, Old Christians of pure blood, untainted by any Jewish or Muslim origin. The villagers pretend to see the marvellous mice, lions, biblical figures and other invisible ‘puppets’ invoked by the tricksters, in order to protect their reputations and so that no one will think they are illegitimate or a New Christian. The play ends with the arrival of a billeting officer who, like the Child in ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’, admits that he sees nothing, and the townspeople jump on him and claim he must be a Jew. The play ends in a big fight, with the tricksters congratulating themselves on a successful swindle.
Concept notes by the directors:
The Widowed Pimp by Bosestudio directed by Santanu Bose is one of the most intriguing piece on body, disease and pleasure. The interlude shatters the idea of patriarchal periphery. The stereotype of feminine body has been turned inside out. In the performance, eros and thanatos are combined in an overlapping imagery and proposes an alter gaze beyond scopophilia and narcissism. The proposed parody of gendered body by Butler has been uniquely underlined by Cervantes, obfuscating the border line of comic and grotesque. Taking a cue from Cervantes, bosestudio presents a performance (ab)using mind and bodies from the glamour and health industry of professional models. It proposes a subversion of the tropes of gender, beauty and sex in the context of the rape capital(s) of today. (Santanu Bose)
The Altar of Wonders by Kaivalya Plays directed by Varoon Anand . Two con-artists and their assistant(s) bring a never before seen show to a small town. The Altar of Wonders is so special that it can only be seen by true believers. Are you special enough to see it? Come find out. (Varoon Anand)
