The poetic voices of dissent and resistance reached their crescendo in El Salvador with the
eruption of the Committed Generation (Generación Comprometida) comprising poets such as Ítalo López Vallecillos, Roberto Armijo, Manlio Argueta and Roque Dalton on the country’s literary panorama in the 1950s and 60s. This talk shall focus on the towering figure of Roque Dalton, whose prolific poetic oeuvre and political conviction established him as the Poet of the Salvadorean Revolution, until, as lamented by his friend and comrade Mario Benedetti, “ he reached way too early a death which was not his”. Apart from commenting certain aspects of his revolutionary poetry, we shall delve into a relatively unknown facet of his repertoire: His unique and significant contribution to Marxist poetics and aesthetics. We shall try to outline the contours of his dynamic Marxist cosmovision which made him steer clear of any poetic dogmatism or determinism and propelled him to forge a revolutionary poetic praxis that continues to be very significant in this era. (Akshay Kale)
About the speaker: Akshay Kale, a Roque Dalton scholar and literary translator, has submitted his Mphil thesis on Roque in Jawaharlal Nehru University. He has collaborated in various cultural activities with Instituto Cervantes and is presently a collaborating professor there.
