Event Description : EXHIBITION "At the turn of a Page" a group art show

The exhibition engages with the ‘graphic’ medium which has been intrinsic to the artistic practice and production. Whether it is through illustrations in books or in animations with drawings, the medium allows for an experiment between text and image, between oral and drawn. It engages with the aspect of narratives in a distinct manner and not always as contained within the art historically known traditional paradigms. It carries the potential to create a different kind of language to make certain stories and histories visible, which may not always be possible through other mediums.

Shrimanti Saha visits mythological tales, and tries to bridge the gap between their oral nature and the visual depiction of them. She takes inspiration from science fiction, philosophy and evolutionary biology, and renders her large scale drawings with these smaller narratives informing and creating a bigger picture. Treibor Mawlong on the other hand creates woodcut prints, recording characters as if they are in a moment of decision between thought and action. His ongoing project, Khasi Folktales, is a graphic novel in Khasi, (a language spoken by the indigenous Khasi tribe in Meghalaya) where he is translating his experience of his native city, Shillong chronicling the folk tales of the tribe. The lines between fiction and reality seem to get blurred in Bakula Nayak’s works. Her illustrations, inspired from children’s book illustrations, surge new stories and meanings to vintage paper which she collected over years. Long lost letters, legal documents, and bill receipts - these objects are transformed from their original utility and find a different life through her interventions. Paul Bill Baritt, an artist from London, creates videos for theatre shows, reciting themes of innocence, greed, childhood and dark humor. Philosophical and sensory, his works feature people, animals and places in a dream-like atmosphere. Humor also plays a role in the mono-prints, zines, and drawings of Renuka Rajiv. Using malleable materials like coffee, ink and thread her works have textual comments interspersed with images offering incongruent accounts of characters she observes around her.

The exhibition is an inquiry into the self-sustaining art practices of these artists inter-laid in making comics, prints, zines, animations and illustrations with the frame of ‘the story’.  If storytelling occurs as an event, being at the turn of a page signifies a moment when stories wait to be seen, heard, touched and felt.

The outreach programs planned with the exhibition include two workshops. The workshops focus on creating dialogues with artists outside the ambit of the exhibition, who in their quite divergent practices, have been invested in the format of ‘the book’. These conversations seek to build deeper engagements with artistic processes, practices and with ‘narrative’ in its different manifestations through ‘sketch-books’ and ‘handmade photo books’. The workshops will be open to people above the age of 18, and will have day-long sessions, starting with a short summary and introduction to the genre and practice of the artist and followed by exercises and discussions with the participants.
