Event Description : EXHIBITION "Abstract Expression" a solo show of Paintings by Dr. Chhaya Dubey.

Art and nature are deeply related, in fact symbiotic; Man exists because of nature! This very existence is in the hands of water, air, fire, light, plants and trees. And if the pursuit of art is hand in hand with nature, then creativity knows no bounds!

Growing up in an orthodox family and being an introvert by nature, I have always found it difficult to express my feelings and maybe this is the reason i made colours my world....a world where I was free...where I was me! In our society, the moment a girl is born, she is tied down with responsibilities and expectations which only increase as she gets married. Motherhood opens a new chapter in her life with her becoming more responsible as she has another person’s goals to achieve now along with her own. The ghazal of Jagjit Singh says it all!

“Apni marzi se kahaan apne safar ke ham hain
Rukh hawaon ka jidhar hai, udhar ham hain”

I chose to flow with the wind; in fact I enjoyed the flow and spread my wings to explore and discover my inner self. Looking for direction, I tried my hand in various fields - Fashion designing, Illustration, Folk Art, Teaching etc but the joy and satisfaction I got when I put colours on canvas is beyond comparison. And each varied experience added to my journey in the world of art and formed a strong base for all that I have done.

Art acts like a balm in every situation- it gives strength to deal with any problem. And if one has one’s loved ones – family, mentors and friends- the most difficult of the journeys becomes easy and we are able to achieve all that we aim for. And today that I am here to give a glimpse of my journey is only because of the support of my near and dear ones.

Since childhood, I have been attracted towards colourful stones, shells in the sand, textures of plants and trees….. looking for shapes in the clouds up in the sky, the interplay of light, the game of hide and seek that the clouds play with the sun- all have been an inspiration for my art!

The measure of beauty in all my work is like the blend of fragrance and soft strokes of colours which influence the environment around me. And just the way fragrance has no shape, my art is also without any defined shape and boundaries. It is abstract and in it’s very abstractness displays the various colours and textures of nature! My art is experiential in character where I am always in search of new and exciting results. My work at present does not have any defined plan- playing with colours on the canvas , free to express my feelings and emotions in my own way gives me immense joy and fulfilment.

My medium of art has been a mixed one- acrylic, oil, dry pastels- used all together but the softness of colours that I get in oils is not to be found in any other. The sharp and forceful strokes I use show the effort and hard work I put in each work of art while the soft and flat strokes speak about my patience and stability and the textures speak about my innate curiosity that I have for everything around me. And just like the sun’s rays are important for Earth and nature and life, the yellow colour is centric in all my work White represents balance and peace, blue and green define nature; burnt sienna and black add depth to the picture while red and orange make it attractive. All these colours together celebrate the beauty of nature. Just like all the notes come together to make music, so do the colours. And music has been an integral part of my journey with the notes and melodies making each stroke of mine more meaningful and expressive.
