Jazz is the flavour for Thursday as The Hungry Monkey and Art Collide bring on 'Shreya and The Cardsharps', a unique jazz trio, a collaboration between Kolkatta and Delhi musicians - Shreya Bhattacharya, Avishek Dey and Adhir Ghosh.
Shreya Bhattacharya is a vocalist who graduated from the Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music proficient in Jazz, R&B and Neo-Soul. Shreya collaborates with musicians as well as playing with her band "Beer Puppets". She likes experimenting with all genres of music, including Pop and Classical Western. Shreya has performed with pianist Carolina Calavache from Colombia and New York, and Karina Colis from Mexico and New York on drums/percussions. She has trained under Natalie John, Veronica Nunes, (in Brazilian and Portugese styles), and Ujjainee Roy Degeanaro, in the Hindustani style. She has performed in ensembles with Steve Zerlin, (Washington DC), Brian Meteryon (California), Ed Degeanaro (Germany) and Parker Mcallister (Brooklyn).
Avishek Dey is a Bass player from Kolkata widely known for his versatility and vocabulary in the instrument. He has trained under phenomenal bass players such as Ric Fierabracci, Mathew Garrison and other artists like Ricardo Vogt, Ed De Genaro, Parker Mcallister and Steve Zerlin. He recently collaborated with artists like saxophonist Marten Visser (Netherlands) and guitarist Mathias Muller (Germany) at the Congo Square Jazz Festival 2015. He is also preparing for his 2016 tour with saxophonist Yuchiro Tokuda (Japan).
Adhir Ghosh is a Delhi-based session guitarist, composer and music teacher. He plays full-time with two bands - Five8 (Funk/Rock) and KitchenSink (Jazz/R&B); and has also performed with Artistes Unlimited, The Yellow Brick Project, Classic Collective, MAP, Vasundhara Vee and others, which has gained him the reputation of being one of the few first-call guitarists in the city.
He studied Contemporary Music at Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music (Chennai, India), where he was awarded the General Excellence Scholarship for pursuing a diploma in performance. At the school, he studied with a range of faculty from The United States, Latin America and Europe. He has also studied privately with a range of teachers in New Delhi.
Apart from this, Adhir completed a Masters in Film Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University in 2011. Further, he has also been a Program Head with Music Basti between 2013 - 2015, a Delhi-based non- profit organization, working for the education and empowerment of children-at-risk, in particular Delhi’s ‘street’ children. As a music educator, he can be contacted for lessons in guitar technique, ear training, harmony and music theory.
