Photo-Poetry "Ecstasies and Other Theresian Visions" by Avani Tanya y Gayatri Ganju

Art statement: Photo-poetry is a series of dialogues between photography and poetry, in which two Indian photographers translate into images a selection of poems written by a Spanish or Latin American poet, or being inspired by them take a photo or series of photos. Each photographer works on two different poems from the same author, and an installation is designed later specifically for displaying their work. On this occasion the selected poet is Teresa of Ávila, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus. Teresa is one of the foremost mystic writers. She defines contemplative prayer as nothing else than a close sharing between friends. But she was not just a quiet, placid Holy woman. She was admired for both her outer charm and inner serenity, and her life energy attracted and inspired many who were close. She was a woman who challenged the religious structures of her time, the 16th century in Spain. Another two women, Avani Tanya and Gayatri Ganju, will give us their particular view on four of her poems.

About the photographers:

Avani Tanya grew up in Ahmedabad, India, and is interested in languages, dreams and the great outdoors. She practises as a visual artist, photographer anddesigner. She is currently based in Bangalore and Bremen, Germany.

Gayatri Ganju : I am a freelance photographer based out of Bangalore. On completing my
Masters in Documentary Photography at the London College of Communication in 2013 I
moved back to India to work on stories closer to home. I see my work as allowing me to becomea guest in someone else's world. Here there is an exchange of trust and acceptance. The experience is magical and humbling every time. Which is why I photograph.
