Event Description : "The Garden Underground" a group show of photographs by Tony Clancy, Arati-Kumar Rao & Juhi Saklani
For the exhibition titled The Garden Underground at Jor Bagh metro station, there will be three panels exhibiting photographs by Tony Clancy, Arati Kumar-Rao and Juhi Saklani. In his photographs, Clancy explores the complex and intertwined history of humans and plants through paintings, photography and cultural history.
Clancy Says, also the curator for the exhibition: “Gardens transform environments for better and for worse. This exhibition brings a small oasis to the depths of the metro system, where passing passengers can enjoy images that evoke the pleasures and spectacle of gardens. Photographed in both India and the UK, the pictures open up a dialogue between East and West, tropical and temperate, between those who create and tend for gardens and those who come to enjoy them.”
Plants have long been, and still are, welcome guests, intruders, exotic specimens, invasive pests, commodities….They form part of the backdrop to our cities, our homes, our lives. This exhibition took as a starting point how gardens reflect different cultural backgrounds, both English and Indian. Environmental photographer Arati Kumar-Rao explores the unique desert garden around the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, where invasive species have been cleared, and the 70 hectare original garden lovingly restored. Travel photographer Juhi Saklani looks at the workers whose often hidden labour and wealth of knowledge and experience actually make the gardens that we enjoy. Tony Clancy’s images celebrate both the exuberant spectacle of flowers in full bloom and more contemplative moments of transience. A website of images and writings will open up the themes of the exhibition.
