"Every Time You Tell A Story" How do you tell a story whose words are a song, a stone, an image, a symbol? A story that is woven into a shawl, woven through time itself?Tsungkotepsu is a shawl worn by men of the Ao-Naga tribe in Nagaland, Northeast India. Traditionally, it signified the achievements of warriors who had won enemy heads in war. Even though headhunting days are long gone, the shawl is still central to Ao-Naga imagination. The film offers an interpretation of history, the shifts that this shawl-making tradition has experienced when confronted with the certitudes of history - early colonial anthropology, new religion and assimilation within the Indian State. The film explores the tension between these historical currents and oral, visual knowledge systems like Tsungkotepsu, while also reflecting on the politics of gaze and representation that Naga people and their cultures have encountered over time. Through histories that have written themselves onto the fabric of the shawl, how does its story continue to resonate today
About the Filmmakers : Ruchika Negi & Amit Mahanti are New Delhi-based filmmakers/ visual artists whose practice lies at the intersection of film, research and art. Their works are centered around questions of ecological transformation and sustainability, development and cultural practice.
