Event Description : PhotoCommune presents "Where the Roads Lead..." a show of photography

Where the Roads Lead... is an exhibition that brings together the works of nine photographers who have sought to illuminate different aspects of travelling through their images. An initiative of the members of PhotoCommune, the exhibition seeks to push the boundaries of travel photography and explore the possibilities of the genre.

PhotoCommune is an independent Delhi-based photography collective whose members hail from diverse backgrounds. They are professionals as well as amateurs – many have not been formally trained in photography. The series they have conceptualised and the images they have shot reflect their varied passions and preoccupations. However, what unites them is an abiding enthusiasm for the art of photography.

Inspired by the belief that there is more to travel photography than pretty postcards and shiny brochures, the photographers captured diverse images that reflect the experience of being in a new place. Daubs of paint on cracked walls, a boat cutting through the vast expanse of the ocean, the pulse of traffic on a busy road, shadows serenading a deserted street – these tell us as much about a place as its monuments and markets.

While Naveed Hussain’s haunting black-and-white images are a meditation on the memories of travels, Dhruv Vyas’s portraits hint towards the latent narratives and perspectives that travel unravels. Vivid colours jump out from the frames of Garima Agarwal to celebrate our cultural heritage, while the muted tones of Surabhi Chowdhury’s photographs evoke the poetry infused in our environs. Notwithstanding the eclecticism of the images, a synthesis has been achieved between the various photographers, their styles and visions through the curatorial enterprise of Deepika Dhiman, an artist who is one of the founding members of PhotoCommune.

About PhotoCommune : PhotoCommune is a Delhi-based collective of photography enthusiasts that conducts workshops, demonstrations, photo tours and mentoring sessions to help further the art and techniques of photography.
