Women and Landscape
My throat filled with stones, tears too light
to bear your story, I spit out words from
a slingshot mouth-sly target unseen. Gulsoma
you smell of roses…the sweet perfume of your smile.
You asked God to let you die at twelve,
You needed no more years to fulfill your destiny,
(What will be the colour of paradise in your dreams?)
Your price-three-million Afghani, principal—you,
your childhood—the interest. This is what I read in black,
Your landscape, the sounds of your places—rock.
Rock-Khost, Khandhar, Lashkar Gah-Rock.
(Gulsoma, river running, still running its course I hope.)
--by Usha Akela in Indian Literature, Jan-Feb 2008, Vol. LII No.1, Sahitya Akademi
Gulsoma is a poem by Usha Akela. Her poem is on an Afghani adolescent woman who is a victim of child abuse. In the very first reading of the poem, I felt that it has a story similar to what I have to express through my work. What are the feelings or emotions of a victim of an abuse? Whether the poets or artists are the most reliable people to express what remains often unexpressed in the silences (of the victims)? Perhaps, this is not the appropriate space to raise such questions. Still, poetry or paintings are cites of such unspoken words and feelings. While Usha’s poem strikes at our heart through the images that she weaves through her words, my work unfolds the emotions in the canvas in a dramatic spread of colors. My work is a culmination of my own observations of the Bangladesh India border where untold stories of many such Gulsoma unfold on a daily basis.
