Event Description : Anubhav Nath, Curatorial Director of Ojas Art presents In the Open, a solo show of sculptures by KS Radhakrishnan
This show will feature around 30 large scale outdoor sculptures done by the artist over the last three decades. First of its kind in India, ‘In the Open’ also will showcase an exclusive pictorial documentation of K.S. Radhakrishnan’s site specific works installed in various National and International venues. The exhibition is accompanied by a book of the same name.
An art collector’s pride and a new collector’s aspiration, K.S. Radhakrishnan’s bronze sculptures have always catered to people with classic taste and eye for refined aesthetics. His works are mostly seen indoors in galleries and museums, but K.S. Radhakrishnan has created many sculptures keeping ‘open air’ as their real living space.
According to him, sculptures need breathing space and a sculpture could breathe well only in the open air. Open air sculpture does not automatically translate into ‘public sculptures’ that are created for ‘public’ consumption. Radhakrishnan has done quite a number of monumental public sculptures. However, in this show, one could have a taste of both the open air and public sculptures.
“An open air sculpture could be public and private at the same time. My works, irrespective of their size, are always conceived as independent aesthetic entities that demand open air for their existence,” the artist said.
“As a city, Delhi has not yet opened to the idea of open air sculptures though we have some public sculptures. K.S. Radhakrishnan’s works are not decorative pieces. They are contemporary works of art with a strong sense of artistic individuality expressed in the enduring medium of bronze. I am quite interested in showcasing this internationally recognized artist’s sculptural narratives with all its mythical, folklore-ish and contemporary vigour,” says Curatorial Director Anubhav Nath, Ojas Art.
Also, the exhibition is accompanied by a book written by noted art historian and critic Johny ML focussing on KS Radhakrishnan’s open air sculptures. Radhakrishnan belongs to (this) lineage of ‘classic’ artists when he speaks of sculptures as the embodiment of absent freedom or freedom in absence and the artist’s ultimate aim is to give them air. If one sees the whole argument bathed in a romantic hue, it would be interesting to see that in Indian mythologies and folklore a sculptor is always seen as a person who ‘gives’ life to a sculpture (often a beautiful female) and falls in love with it/her by breathing ‘air’ into it,” observes Johny ML in the book.
About KS Radhakrishnan : KS Radhakrishnan is a sculptor. Born in 1956 in Kottayam (Kerala), he was educated in Santiniketan (West Bengal). He has had more than fifteen solo shows including at Centre des Bonds de Marne in LePerreux-Bry sur Marne (Paris), Lalit Kala Akademi (New Delhi), Birla Academy of Art and Culture (Kolkata).
Among the numerous group shows at which his works have been exhibited are the National Exhibition at New Delhi (1980),; Triennalle India (1990); Salon International de la Sculpture Contemporaine at Nouveav Forum des Halles, Paris (1995); Hippodrome d’e lonchamp, Paris (1996); Espace Michel Simon-Noisy le grand, France (1996).
Radhakrishnan has installed open air sculptures across the country and abroad including at the India House, London; TMI Foundation, Cotignac and most recently in public areas in Goa and Santiniketan. His most recent curatorial project is Ramkinkar Baij: A Retrospective, which opened at the NGMA, New Delhi in 2012. NGMA, Bengaluru hosted his solo show curated by R. Sivakumar in the end of 2015.
