Event Description : "Carved Contours" A solo exhibition of selected works by Jamini Roy from the Dhoomimal Collection.
A 42-day Jamini Roy exhibition will be on in the capital from this month-end, bringing 80 works of the 20th-century master to public view for the first time. The January 29-March 10 show at Dhoomimal Gallery Delhi will have Jamini Roy’s drawings and paintings from the Ravi & Uma Jain estate. Curated by critic-scholar Uma Nair, the works at ‘Carved Contours’ represent Roy’s inspiration from the Kalighat paintings of Calcutta and the ‘Pat’ style of rural Bengal. Done on cloth, board and paper, the show features a series of simple monumental images of sari-clad women, village dancers and domestic animals besides madonnas, Christ and the famed Ramayan series, points out the Delhi-based curator who has deeply researched on Roy (1887-1972)—an eminent pupil of Abanindranath Tagore. For all that tutelage, Roy’s was a reaction against the Bengal School and Western tradition of art.
Curator: Art critic-columnist Uma Nair
