Event Description : Akshara Theatre presents "India’s War of Independence – 1857" English Play.

From the book Red Lotus by Parag Tope and 1857 compilations translated into English by Mrinal Pande.
The only Indian eyewitness account of India’s First War of Independence, the 1857 Mutiny, as the British call it, is presented in a powerful new play by the Akshara Theatre based on the source material and work of the Bharatiya Itihas Shodhak Mandal, and from various later books and films in Hindi, Marathi and English, including Tatya Tope’s Operation Red Lotus by Parag Tope and an English translation, 1857, from various sources by Mrinal Pandey.
The stories of young Vishnu Bhatt’s, the Indian eye witnesses (a Chitpavan Brahmin from Kolaba district on the west coast, south of Mumbai), are amazing because his stories are true, they are the only Indian eyewitness accounts of the Mutiny/ First War of Independence we have.
They are particularly interesting because a large portion of the material already in print (numerous novels in Hindi, Marathi and English, and films, as well as serious studies based in the 249 papers Vishnu Bhatt left behind) concerns Jhansi and the famous Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi — her heroic fight against the East India Company and the British Government, and the British inability to capture her alive.  They wanted to make an example of the Rani by sticking her severed head on her captured Jhansi Fort , a horrible example of those who dared to oppose the British land grabbing and looting tactics.
But Rani Lakshmibai lived and died a free person. We Indians have learnt our history from Macauley’s famous Note that created the curriculum for Indian school and University education which has made us all into “Macauley’s children” .
This play attempts to show us our own view of history.
The play is performed by a mixed cast of young Akshara students and the Akshara Repertory. Jalabala Vaidya is the Narrator and her grand-daughter Yashna Shetty plays Lakshmibai. Gurjas Singh is Vishnu Bhatt, the protagonist. Shikha Rajpal, Rakesh Palisetty, Dhruv Shetty, Tanmay Singh, R.S. Raghu, Tanisha Singh, Avi Kapoor and others make up the rest of the cast.

Adapted & Directed by Gopal Sharman & Jalabala Vaidya
