Event Description :
"Diary Entries" an art show by five women artists.

Curated by Gayatri Sinha

With technology as an instrument of communication in the 21st century the diary as a minor, even domestic art form has slipped away into the recesses of time. However for centuries the diary has afforded a private life, a space that allowed respite from the everyday, and a release to memory, reflection and fantasy. In the hands of the artist, the diary is like a sketchbook, the first sign of commitment to an idea. Artists like Nasreen Mohamedi and more recently Bharti Kher have kept extensive journals; others including Nilima Sheikh and Sheba Chhachhi use text and references to poetry and literature extensively in their work, creating evocative spaces that allow for both word and image to collaborate and create meaning.

In Diary Entries the tiered environs of Gallery Espace has been offered to the artists as a space, as a habitation, or as a reconstruction of memory. In turn they have responded with the richness and diversity of their practice. The artists have used diverse materials such as drawing, video and sculpture, bringing in autobiography, as well as ideas on the present environment to bear. The work is both intimate and reflective, and has been especially created for the exhibition.

Mrs, Renu Modi, Owner & Founder, Gallery Espace avers, “Diaries Entries is an exhibition that is dedicated to those women, confined to domestic spaces, the demands of work or child rearing and the diary was often a shadow life, allowing for conversations even across time, sometimes. Very often it served as a parallel life, for women who practiced painting or photography or theatre, slipping easily into the form of autobiography. The exhibition will talk about the personal journey of each artist, which is very interesting.”

The brief about the work of the artists exhibiting at DIARY ENTRIES:

Nilima Sheikh in this series the artist remembers the past through scattered notations in a diary or a sketchbook, as small recollections come back: of a May morning, a lost friend or ayet to be finished work. As they rise  within the mind these images seek not resolutions but  rather an extension into something new. In this suite of works Sheikhs mastery over the miniature technique and her outstanding skills as a colourist are on view.

Dr Paula Sengupta turns to the work as a commemoration of bereavement. In the work The Kerchief Garden, she has made use of handkerchiefs used by her mother, mother-in-law and herself, like witnesses to history and use, embroidered with motifs intimate to her life they capture the emotions and thoughts of the artist.

HemaliBhuta’s work in this series is of works on paper and sculptures enquirers into the presence of sculpture in its absence, the value of an object embedded within its tools, how the surface will transition into the other. Turning to the materials of the making of the city, she examines the possibilities of a construction, a breakdown and a reconstruction.

Sheba Chhachhi in this series explores the journal as a room, private, ordinary yet rendered strange. The space evokes the half hidden world of the journal where one manages only a glimpse of thoughts never fully revealed.

BenithaPerciyal, in the present work, evokes childhood memory, forgotten objects and the relationship between material and memory. Objects are the bearers of the past, especially in times of war, or devastation, when there is no recourse to testimony.
