Event Description : Meeting with the writer: “Espido Freire”
Synopsis: The Spanish writer Espido Freire will give us a contemporary and modern view on the life and thoughts of St. Teresa of Avila. Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada was born five hundred years ago, and her figure and her words come to us so intense and refreshing as they were in her day, maybe even more, through a very special voice, Espido Freire’s. She has recently published a book as a daily, sharing what could be a month with Teresa. She has spent several months with Teresa in order to bring to the reader, a way of coping with life that may make sense today. Alternative part biography, part meditation on her thoughts and most relevant phrases, Espido Freire talks to Teresa about the difficulty of being a woman in a man's world, the conflict between spirituality and action, the spirit of excellence, mental illness, writing as therapy, travel, the craving for knowledge, the need for good living / good death, relationships with family as a source of growth or delimitation, man woman friendship, the contemplative life, to build a complete and original guide for life.
About the writer: Espido Freire was born in Bilbao in 1974. After devoting her younger years to her Early Music studies, she got a degree in English Literature by the University of Deusto, where she also completed a Master in Edition. She published her first novel, “Irlanda”, in Planeta Ed. (1998), when she was only 23 years old. Being young was only an advantage to her, and she published her second success in 1999: “Donde siempre es Octubre”, (Seix Barral), immediately followed by “Melocotones Helados”, the novel she won the Planeta Award (best known literary award in Spain) with, only half a year after. At that point she was only 25 years old, which meant that she had become the youngest novelist awarded with the Planeta. In 2000, Espido decided to enter a new gender and surprised the public with “Primer Amor”, published in Temas de Hoy, an essay on love icons and fairy tales. But she had not tried everything yet, and in 2001 she came out with “Aland la Blanca” (Debolsillo), a poem book that convinced both the public and the critic of Espido´s diverse talent. This was confirmed by her next publication: “La última batalla”, in SM, a young reader´s novel that appeared just before “Diabulus in música” (Planeta), where she goes back to her Early Music studies. In 2002 she commits herself to the writing of a new essay “Cuando comer es un infierno”, (When eating is hell, El País-Aguilar) a research about young women dealing with bulimia, pain and recovery, which had the biggest success among experts and victims. Espido takes fiction up again with “Nos espera la noche” (Alfaguara, 2003); but does not leave her essayist facet and writes “Querida Jane, querida Charlotte” in 2004 (El País-Aguilar), a new research and point of view on Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters. Another has been published in 2005, “La diosa del pubis azul”, written with Raúl del Pozo, a well known Spanish journalist. In 2006 she published “Mileuristas”, an essay on her own generation, followed by a second part “Mileuristas II”, (Ariel, 2008).
With her novel “Soria Moria” she won the Ateneo of Sevilla Prize, becoming the youngest winner. After it, she published “La flor del Norte” (“The flower from the North”, her first historical novel based on 12th Century Norwegian princess Kristina. Her collection of short stories are - “El tiempo huye” (NH Short Stories Award in 2001), “Cuentos malvados” (Punto de Lectura, 2003, reprinted by Páginas de Espuma in 2010), “Juegos míos” (Alfaguara, 2004) and “El trabajo os hará libres” (Páginas de Espuma, 2008). Short stories by Espido Freire have been sprayed the editorial world: from “Vidas de mujer”,(Alianza Editorial, 1999) to “Rusia Imaginada” (Nevsky 2011). She also writes for newspapers and magazines, radio and television programs and works a freelance translator. Critics have greeted her as one of the fresher and more interesting voices in the Spanish literary field, and the excellent reviews on her first novel have been repeated more than once ever since. She has been translated into English, French, German, Portuguese, Turkish, Polish, Italian, Greek, Serbian… and her novel “Irlanda” got in 1999 the “Millepage” Award, given by the French librarians to the best foreign work. In 2000 she also got the “Qué Leer” Award, given by the readers to the best Spanish novel. She is also interested in Creative Writing and usually teaches at different universities and cultural foundations. She has opened her own School of Creative Writing, E+F
