Event Description : Tasveer in association with Mapin presents "Maharanis: Women of Royal India" a photography show.
Also being launched in Delhi, on the occasion of the preview, is the book published in conjunction with the exhibition.
With a selection of stunning photographs sourced from institutions and individuals all across the country and abroad, this exhibition and book attempt to redress the vacuum in our documentation and understanding of both the visual representation and historical significance of women in erstwhile Princely India.
With photographs of women from royal families across the country for over half a century, it is also a narrative of the changing tropes of photographic portraiture; and a window into a period of great political, social and cultural change.
The book, also titled Maharanis: Women of Royal India, includes several additional images aside from those in the exhibit, and four original commissioned texts by K. G. Pramod, Amin Jaffer, Martand Singh and Shilpa Vijayakrishnan, as also an introduction by Abhishek Poddar & Nathaniel Gaskell.
