Event Description :
Gallery Art Positive presents “Ode to the Bosphorus” by Dipti Bondre

Mumbai-based artist Dipti Bondre has evoked history and geometry to create her latest exhibition Ode to the Bosphorus. It explores the uniting elements between the Turkish-Islamic architectural heritage and Yantras and Mandalas.

Bondre’s latest series of works emerged out of her month-long stay in Istanbul. It includes photographs, which were taken by the artist in Istanbul. These are printed on canvas and hand-painted over with gold Yantras in accordance to the science of geometry. These works are back lit, and the image changes with light. The artist, who graduated in Fine Arts from Sir J.J School of Art in Mumbai, used the technique here to reveal the underlying image under the painted gold Yantra, once it is lit. Working with light is not new to Bondre. She has acquired a patent for invention of “Image that changes with light” just after her scholarship at the 135-year-old Atelier Art School in New York.

“Sacred Geometry is the fountain head and genesis of this series. Throughout history geometric designs have been ascribed with symbolic and scared meaning.  A cultural and intellectual dialogue, which began with the trade routes spawned for centuries.I have attempted at presenting the unity between the ancient civilizations of Turkey
and India - says the artist.

Basilica Cistern comes alive through the gayatri yantra, which is used on water; the Turkish evil eye combines forces with the kuber yantra that symbolises prosperity; the head of medusa finds expression through Kali yantra as she is the destroyer of evil forces; heaps of spices with their mystical triangular formations come alive with sri yantra, which is known to usher in peace and good fortune; the virgin Mary becomes the centre of worship with the most significant of all the symbols in sacred geometry, the Flower of Life Yantra for it contains within it the proportions of every single aspect of life there is.

“Done in acrylic on canvas with lights, Ode to Bosphorus intends to draw focus and attention to harmony and oneness - the key elements to peace. This is my endeavour and the purpose of this body of work,” adds Bondre.
