Event Description : Shaw's Corner (India) presents "The Lonesome West" English Play. 

The Lonesome West is the final part of a trilogy set in a west of Ireland village called Leenane. McDonagh draws on J M Synge's portrayal of Western Ireland as culturally, economically and perhaps intellectually impoverished region. Not many know that J M Synge was urged by W B Yeats, on many occasions, during their meetings to stay in this part of Ireland and write about it. This makes the enactment of a McDonagh play during Yeats' commemoration meaningful. Martin McDonagh's rural western Ireland is a place of surreal fuedal strife where sons kill fathers because they criticise their hair, despairing villagers walk into the lake to die and the local priest has an hourly crisis of faith rendering him spiritually impotent. Of course it is a comedy- the blackest of dark comedies- and very funny indeed, even though in the space of a few seconds a laugh is frozen by the physical violence that follows. THE LONESOME WEST: Valene and Coleman, two brothers living aline in their father's house after his recent death, find it impossible to exist without the massive and violent disputes over the most mundane and innocent topics. Only father Welsh, the local young priest, is prepared to try to reconcile the two before their petty squabbles spiral into vicious and bloody carnage.

MARTIN McDonagh: His first play the Beauty Queen of Leenane was nominated for six Tony awards, of which it won four. It won the BbC award for the 'Best New Play'. The Lonesome West premiered in 1997 and has had raving reviews ever since it opened.
