interior.lib (Fly-through) - Tara Kelton
What happens when drawing meets 3D modelling software, online libraries of rendered objects, and an array of desktop publishing workers? Or, better still, what if the eye and the hand of the artist, and the originality implied in her gestures, are replaced with the choices of amateur craftsmen of 3D-rendered forms, the skills of informal digital workers, and instructional processes of production? interior.lib (Fly-through) is a path traced by artist Tara Kelton along which one can explore how private environments of the everyday, and the objects inhabiting them are shaped by modes of creation and circulation, as well as types of commodification, that have risen with the movement of design practices online and on web-based platforms such as the well-known 3D Warehouse library.
The exhibition includes a collection of objects that, despite their often being tridimensional, digital and painstakingly rendered, celebrate the practice of drawing—the representation of the visual world—and its often difficult to define evolution. The artworks all together remind us that drawing has not been lost or relegated to composition or structural visual studies, but has been reinvented by artistic explorations into the workings of tools of productions throughout the centuries. Here they are explored not only in relation to the visual and the aesthetic, but also to production and economic models, as well as trends dictated by corporations and brands.
Kelton’s work investigates moments in which technology influences perception, labour and the artist’s gesture. Kelton has had solo exhibitions at GALLERYSKE, Bangalore (2014), and or-bits.com / Banner Repeater, London (2013). Her work has featured in group exhibitions at the Sandra and David Bakalar Gallery, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston (2015), the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Kochi (2014), Museum of Conflict, Ahmedabad (2014), Franklin Street Works, Stamford (2013 & 2011), Centre for Internet and Society, Bangalore (2013), the Queens Museum of Art, New York (2012), and at Vox Populi, Philadelphia (2011) amongst others. Kelton lives and works in Bangalore, India
Sweet Subjunctive – Mariam Suhail
“The most alarming and perplexing thing about the whole incident was the extent to which the shirt was torn. Why would the dog (or anyone) do this?”
Examining some suppositions and selected occurrences, Mariam Suhail’s Sweet Subjunctive looks at possibilities within the ‘telling’ of past or future events, its multiple imaginings as well as the idea of the naturally occurring sequel.
Suhail's work stems from the incidental, undocumented minutia of conversations, media, culture, and the everyday. She employs languages from within these sources to dissect and re-present what may exist in the spaces between exchanges and ideas, historical events and daily occurrences, resulting in works in the form of objects, texts, video, images, drawings and books.
Suhail’s works have most recently been part of All the World’s Futures at the 56th Venice Biennale (2015), the 8th edition of the Berlin Biennale (2014) and her solo project Brooding Protagonist was presented at Discoveries, Art Basel Hong Kong (2013). Other solo exhibitions include Accidental Excavations at Grey Noise, Dubai (2014), Breakdown of Shorter Concerns (2011) and fig. 1. (2009) at GALLERYSKE, Bangalore. Her work was also shown in Minimal Forms of Reality at the Bunkier Sztuki Gallery for Contemporary Art, Krakow (2015), Constructs/ Constructions at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi (2015) and earlier, a triple feature at the Tilton Gallery, New York (2013), the Skoda Prize 2012 Exhibition at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi (2013) and Sites of Substance, one of ten inaugural shows of the National Art Gallery, Islamabad (2007). Suhail lives and works in Bangalore, India.
