Event Description :
Priyank Jain, Director, Dhoomimal.com presents "Pure Concept" a group show of drawings by leading Indian artists.

Artists whose drawings will be on display include Akbar Padamsee, Anupam Sud, FN Souza, Ganesh Pyne, Jamini Roy, Kartick Pyne, KG Subramanyan, Krishen Khanna, Lalu Prasad Shaw, Manu Parekh, Nandalal Bose, Neeraj Goswami, Nikhil Biswas, Rameshwar Broota, Ramkinkar Baij, Sanjay Bhattacharya, Sudhir Patwardhan, Sunil Das and Vrindavan Solanki.

Says Priyank Jain, “The show exhibits the extraordinary skill and sureness with which drawings are executed. The brisk and irreversible mark of the pen or pencil, the instinctive selection of the few essential lines and the dependence on rhythm instead of structure constitute some of the charms of drawings by these great masters.”

While Akbar Padamsee’s drawings pulsate with a raw, throbbing energy and stylised figuration, Souza’s minimalist drawing is typically satirical. Drawings by Nandalal Bose and Vrindavan Solanki bring out the inherent beauty of a feminine form, while the figures drawn by Krishen Khanna and Lalu Prasad Shaw are introspective and inward-looking. Other artists too have imparted their characteristic style to their drawings, be it Anupam Sud’s firmly drawn figuration of men and women, Ganesh Pyne’s romanticism or Rameshwar Broota’s intense detailing.

Hence, these artworks exhibit that line and drawing must always work in unison. The most remarkable quality of line in drawing is its capacity to suggest solid form, its nuances and contours. A form must be defined by drawing an outline and this outline, unless it is to remain lifeless, must carry a rhythm of its own.  While line must have the ability to spring, dance and take off on its own rhythm and strength suggesting both movement and form, tone, texture, light and shade in drawing can indeed suggest weight, volume and contour by way of moulding the form. In fact form is suggested by the two vital ingredients of line and light and shade, the former by its variation of thickness and the latter by the gradation of light and dark.
