Event Description : In Celebration of the Africa Summit in New Delhi in October 2015, N.D.M.C. presents akshara theatre’s "Barrister At Law" A play by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas.

Barrister At Law is a play written by the eminent film-maker, director, columnist, activist and author the late Khwaja Ahmed Abbas, about Gandhi’s formative years in South Africa.

It is directed at his special request by internationally acclaimed playwright-director Gopal Sharman, Founding-Director of New Delhi’s Akshara Theatre.

Mahatma Gandhi is the greatest symbol of tolerance, freedom and national integration in contemporary history.

The play underlines the joint struggle of Hindu and Muslim Indians in South Africa, as well as the Blacks of South Africa. South Africa was the crucible where Gandhi’s political philosophy was forged, in the fire of oppression and intolerance. Gandhi learned first-hand about brutality, discrimination and inequality in his 21 years in South Africa, and formed his credos of non-violence  ‘ahimsa’, and ‘satyagraha’ firmness for truth– based on his experiences there. Characters from history include Kasturba, Abdullah Seth, the Bishop of Natal etc. When Gandhi returned to India in 2015, his direction was clear and his goal of freedom through non-violence was fixed.

His was an all-inclusive philosophy, which included and indeed propagated freedom and equality between all religions, castes and creeds.

On the occasion of the Africa Summit which coincides with the centenary year of Gandhi’s return from South Africa, this philosophy remains crucial and relevant to the development of India as well as the developing world.

The play is narrated by renowned actress Jalabala Vaidya and performed by Vijay S. Kumar as Gandhi, supported by Shikha Rajpal, Sudhir Tandon, Dhruv Shetty, Rajan Narain, Ankur Anand and other actors of the Akshara Repertory.
