Event Description : "(Is it Ever) Black & White" a group show of paintings, sculptures, etchings & artistic furniture by contemporary artists.

Through paintings, sculptures, etchings, drawings and artistic furniture, it demonstrates the freedom that lies between and beyond the two seemingly opposite or contrary forces/concepts of black and white, light and dark, absence and presence, the sacred and the profane, war and peace, night and day, even love and hate. It questions this polarization, the very idea of making black and white mutually exclusive, of having to choose between the two.

Through the works on view, it attempts to demonstrate how that in itself is an oversimplification of complex matters and how it is something that proliferates into our everyday vocabulary, only too recognizable in our casual conversations. At the most simplistic level, what may not be difficult is not necessarily easy, and what may not be good may not at all be evil and so on. The theme of the show itself is a play on the words ‘Black and White’ and the bracketed ‘ Is It Ever’ showing how ours is a complex world and the situations multi-faceted; and we can no longer view and resolve everything through a binary lens.

At the visual level, as the title of the show suggests, the works on display aren’t just blacks and whites or tones that lie between; the collection shows that there is a colour-filled world out there without which it is impossible to imagine life. It is a show of blacks and whites and of colours and contrasts, of yin and yang, of paradoxes and similarities, of light and dark and gentle chiaroscuro.

In Asian philosophy, Yin and Yang are not opposites but intrinsically interconnected and interdependent in the natural world. They emerge from one another, complement each other and cannot exist without each other. The exhibits at the show “(Is It Ever) Black & White” show off beauty in this contrast & how one enhances the other, resulting in a magnificent relationship of thoughts and ideas as envisioned by the participating artists and analyzed by the curator.

As an extension of this relationship, the gallery space itself is built upon the relationship of art with space. It has three components – the formal display gallery, the sculpture garden and a space designed as a modern lounge to exhibit art the way it would actually look in a real space where it would be eventually housed. In that sense, the outdoors and the two indoor display areas form the two possible spaces where art ultimately resides.

An unusual gallery, Art Centrix Space is so designed as to simplify the appreciation and viewing of art – works of art can be pulled out of the formal display spaces and displayed in context of a modern lounge to recreate the actual relationship they would have in an inhabited, lived–in space, thereby providing a 360 degrees art experience. Essentially, it provides a relaxed environment amidst natural surroundings to truly enjoy art the way it should be.
