About Second String Project:
SSP Canada
Formed in 2009. In early 2010, The Project started to gain some speed and began taking on bigger gigs, benefit shows and opening for some larger name bands. It was at this time, I split with my original partner due to differing opinions on our direction and some other opportunities that had been presented to him. It was a very amicable split, and he is still doing well to this day. I set about expanding SSP into an electric four piece rock and roll band. It didn’t take long to secure three very talented musicians, and through common interest we started playing a lot of classic rock covers, particularly The Beatles. In late 2011, we were approached by a promoter to play a John Lennon Tribute Concert on December 8th of that year. We agreed, and over the course of the following week, due to some artist complications with the other bands, our 30 minute tribute set, turned into a two and a half hour headlining show! With only two weeks to prepare, we took on the role of The Beatles themselves and developed a stage show called “A Rehearsal Revisited” focused around the recording of the Abby Road album. We added props, dialogues,
and some outside actors to enhance the feel of the show, complete with our own Yoko Ono! The idea was to invite the audience into the studio to watch us record that iconic album. We smoked cigarettes, argued, let songs break down during the performance, left the stage on a whim, and basically ignored the audience. It was a great success. We continued on with this production for almost a year, but as all things do, sadly, it came to an end mid 2012. We went our separate ways, and SSP evolved into a gig specific band, with different musicians coming and going, keyboards, saxophones, fiddles, bongo’s and tambourines, every gig was unique and always a great time.
SSP in India
After my relocation to India mid 2013, I stuck with the name “The Second String Project” and began playing solo acoustic gigs in Rishikesh, Goa and Delhi. While that was a very rewarding experience, it wasn’t long before I started missing the stage lights, loud guitar and screams from a rock and roll audience. It was time to start a band here. It was more difficult than I thought. The musical landscape is littered with session players and mercenaries. No one seemed willing to commit to just one band, everyone was in two or three, and I was continually bombarded with the same question. “Do you have any paid gigs?” One by one, guitarists, drummers, and bassists came and went, no one ever really lasting long enough to learn a full two hour show. There was another problem, even though there is no lack of very talented musicians in India, there are few with interest in Rock and Roll, the primary focuses seem to be Sufi, Bollywood, Heavy Metal, and to a lesser degree Blues and Jazz. Finally, after much trial and error, in mid 2014, a keyboardist stuck, and the search continued. Suddenly a drummer, then lead guitar, and finally a bassist all settled into the groove. I had managed to source out four of the best musicians in Delhi, each of them committed and with a keen rock and roll soul. We immediately went underground into jam pads all over Delhi and over the next eight months started crafting my original songs and reworking some iconic covers. Ultimately , after my lengthy return trip to Canada in early 2015 we were ready, and The Second String Project burst onto the Delhi music scene with our debut gig at DLF The Magnolias, the show was a huge success and was quickly followed with a feature broadcast on 94.3 Radio One, on the Drive Delhi show. The Second String Project is now full steam ahead, and at long last ready to inject pure rock and roll into India’s musical veins.
