Event Description : Shapno Ekhon presents Badal Sircar's "Bagh" Hindi Play.

Bagh is a short play written by Badal Sircar in 1965, with a central theme of "friendship". The play is inspired by Murray Schisgal’s “The Tiger”. Badal Sircar himself confesses that apart from being inspired by Schisgal’s work, there is hardly any similarity to it as he has woven into it his own way of looking at things, which is quite unique.
Just like all Badal Sircar plays it has multiple layers challenging individual perceptions on individuals based on behavior, appearance and other external features. He explores relations between the apparently powerful and the weak and the possibility of a mutually sustaining relationship if one can overcome the barriers of the external inequities, unpleasantries and look within for basic human qualities.
The play begins with a young girl being kidnapped by another person who refers to himself as “Bagh”. He portrays himself to be a fierce animal and makes all attempts to frighten his hostage. But somehow he fails to fit the bill of a typical kidnapper. Somewhere behind the façade of a dreaded  torturer, one gets glimpses of a very sensitive and insecure human being who cannot bear a woman crying, who is pained by the insensitivities of the world and has been wronged by the so called “powerful” in the world. The breaches in the armour soon become evident and wider and the hostage soon finds ways to crack the hard outer shell and brings out the softer core which seems to be full of human qualities, much more than an average human being that one would encounter on a day to day basis.
They strike up a conversation and eventually they find common grounds of interest and concern. It turns out that both of them have their own frustrations in life, successes, failures and things that both would want to forget about. Finally, to the utter disbelief of the “Bagh” the hostage lends out a helping hand. What started with a grotesque kidnap with the possibility of a disaster ended in a new friendship based on trust and a mutually rewarding relationship.
