Event Description : "Masterpieces : Now & Then" a group art exhibition of paintings.
Concept : Masterpieces are timeless. This exhibition titled ‘Masterpieces: Now and Then’ is to show case matchless masterstrokes of distinguishe artists liked M F Husain, S. H. Raza, F. N. Suza and Ram Kumar from Bombay progressive artist group, and Thota Vaikuntam from Andhra Pradesh and selected works from three approaching artists like Manju Narain, Nira Davar and Meghna Agarwal from Delhi to mark their tireless effort and dedication towards art.
The everlasting works by the masters are always path breaking, as we say the ‘old is gold’. The collection includes work created in 1963, the oldest to mention. This is an exposition of pride showcasing the distinctive works of the founder members of The Progressive Artists' Group which was to encourage an Indian avant-garde, engaged at an international level. The master painters painted with absolute freedom for content and technique, almost anarchic, of aesthetic order, plastic co-ordination and colour composition.
European Modernism was the most distinctive influence on the group, but its members worked in dramatically different styles, from the Expressionism to the pure abstraction. Specific Indian imagery and landscapes were also adopted, particularly by M. F. Husain. These masterpieces created by legendary artists are landmark of Indian Modernism which became the foundation for contemporary styles created by the artists of recent times.
Thota Vaikuntam’s work has the stabilization; his figures seem to dance, as if following their creator in a statuesque movement, reminiscent of temple friezes based on simple lifestyle of villagers, the household chores, temple rituals etc
The creation of three artists from Delhi are surely notable and deserves appreciation as they crossed many more established artists of their times to be placed with such celebrated masterworks. The artworks from then and now are on display at one stage for the viewers to have a feast for their eyes and a pleasure of beauty for their souls.
Nira Davar, a Delhi based artist works are simple with elements taken from the society. The works show objects of household depicted in abstract manner. The artists apply dabs of colours. Her paintings shows spontaneity and highly importance paid on texture.
Manju Narain works are mostly on paper. Her works depict the soft usage of pencil and charcoal. Her works depict animals mostly in a fairy tale background. She also works with geometric forms superimposed on each other.
Meghna Agarwal works showcases animals who are burdened by buildings, human beings and vehicles. She has tried to depict the society around how humans are cutting the land for their own housing thus leaving no space for survival of animals. The background has texture and flat application of colours.
