Event Description : "Joy of Life" an exhibition of paintings by Sangeeta Kumar Murthy.

In 2008, I started drawing turtles as they fascinated me. The fascination was majorly because of the positive energy that turtles bring, such as, longevity, strength, prosperity and success. In 2012, I got the opportunity to represent India in SAARC, Srilanka. During my visit, I visited farms where turtles were bred. I got to see turtles that were 2 days old to as old as 50 years. This visit increased my knowledge wherein I found out about Albino Turtles and various others. A few of these were also those that survived natural disasters such as Tsunami with only one fin.

In the ancient times it’s said that Lord Vishnu took the avatar of a turtle and carried the whole world on his back. In one of the paintings from the ‘Joy of Life’ series, I have depicted today’s world, which is becoming a concrete jungle wherein a man is sitting on the top of the world, holding plants and trying to save the environment for a healthy living. Many such causes are spoken of through the paintings, just like our mythology states. These paintings are a blend of Indian mythology and contemporary time.

Also over the years, I have collected several art pieces of turtles from across the globe. Since I started reading up on turtles, I gathered that one of the largest nesting places in India is Paradeep Beach, which is a confluence of the river Mahanadi and Bay of Bengal. I’m also trying to compile pictures and videos that I have shot over the years, I am making a documentary from the same. All these instances have motivated me to work towards the ‘Joy of Life’ series and gain knowledge about them.
