Event Description : ICCR presents "Jazz in the Park" an exhibition of paintings by Sasmita Mishra.
'Jazz in the Park' is Sasmita's fourth solo exhibition. Her earlier solos were the 'Impressions' series held in Beijing, London and Tehran (Impressions I, II and III) respectively. In the present solo, she has ventured out into the realm of story telling through her paintings.
'Jazz in the Park' revolves around the theme of celebration of life both in happiness and in suffering; in gathering and in solitude; in gain and in loss. A combination of oil paintings, prints (silk and wood-cut) and gauche on paper, the exhibition represents the versatility of the artist in both her thinking and execution. The stories carry a deep understanding of both oriental and occidental thoughts and traditions.
Trained in London (Southwark College) and Beijing (Central Academy of Fine Arts), the works in this series are an attempt to blend western technique with Indian tradition of miniature and folk painting. Richly inspired by the immediacy and life affirming Indian miniature works and folk paintings, the artist has tried to weave the stories employing the cultural ethos of India which is her heritage and destiny.
The artist's works have also participated in group shows at Shridharani gallery, Visual Art Gallery, India Habitat Centre, HUDCO gallery, 5th Lexicon Art Exhibition (Gurgaon), Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir (Pune) in India.
