Event Description : An exhibition of Pichwai Paintings.
The Rajasthanis take immense pride in their culture and history. The art and crafts of the region reflects this regard towards their heritage. The paintings are vivid impressions of the historic events the region has seen and the expression of the artisans' veneration of the religion, rituals and customs of the land.
The myths and legends finds expression in the paintings and craft of these painters. Textile paintings of the state such as Phad, Pichwai and Batik paintings are the most sought after worldwide. Nathdwara Pichwais are a ritual art form, an offering to the deities, especially Hindu Gods and Goddesses. They are brilliantly colored paintings that adorn the walls of the temples of Rajasthan. The use of rich and vibrant colors provides the Pichwais a distinctive quality that sets it apart from other paintings of the state. These paintings enhance the aesthetic appeal of the temples they grace. The themes revolve around the Lord Sri Krishna in the form of Srinathji. Various episodes of Srinathji such as the raas-leela etc. and the Nathdwara temple festivities are portrayed in the Pichwais. Udaipur and Nathdwara are very famous for the Pichwai paintings, especially Nathdwara, as the celebrated Srinathji temple is located here. Pichwais are generally artisans' renderings to the Lord but they are also sometimes undertaken for commercial purpose. The religious fervor of the painter is reflected in each Pichwai made to decorate the Lord's temple.
Other than religious themes, pichwais with other themes are also made, such as court scenes, women in the garden, floral and animal motifs etc.
Pichwais are generally painted, but sometimes rich embroidery or appliqué work is used on the paintings. Enclosed in a dark border, rich colours like red, green, yellow, white and black are used, with a lot of gold decorating the figures.
On a starched cloth, the painter first makes a rough sketch and then fills in the colours. Traditionally natural colours and brushes made of horse, goat or squirrel hair were used, but now faster and less expensive material have replaced them. One can still find many paintings done with natural colours only. The use of pure gold in the paintings adds to their value and charm. For one painting, it may take 3-4 days to just prepare colour from pure gold.
